From Darfur to Kensington

The Times has a piece about a piece of our neighborhood:

"SOME arrived as early as 1987, others as recently as this year. Many came by way of Fort Wayne, Ind., where they originally landed as refugees but could not find enough work. Now, more than 300 immigrants from the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan live in Kensington, Brooklyn, according to the leaders of the Darfur People’s Association of New York, a community group.

As voting begins Sunday in Sudan in what is being called the country’s first meaningful election in more than 20 years, the immigrants in Kensington have been meeting and rallying to express opposition to the incumbent president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who has been indicted on crimes against humanity for the bloodshed in Darfur."
