Last year, the owners of Bishop Boardman Apartments on Eighth Avenue, between Windsor Place and 16th Street, planned an extensive garden with 38 individual plots. The seniors who live in the building represent a wide range of nationalities, including Chinese, Russian, Hispanic, and American. They tell the Daily News that the garden helps bring them together:
"Everyone is very satisfied," said Doris Greco, 82. "Everyone enjoys it. We get together and have little conversations. It’s good for the Chinese, the Americans, to get together. We mingle more."
...Greco said she had never planted anything in her life, yet sprouted the first cucumber, which grew so big she thought it was a squash.
"I'm thrilled," she said. "I think God said, 'Let's give her a break – 82 years old and she’s never planted a thing.'"
The plots were assigned by lottery, which 65 people had entered--which means 27 people wanted to garden who didn't get to. There's got to be a place nearby where they can go to garden. Maybe a vacant lot that someone could reclaim for the seniors? Anyone got any ideas?
