Living on a hill has its advantages: you build strong leg muscles walking around, and when a hurricane strikes, you're not in a flood zone.
Hurricane Irene is heading up the coast this weekend, and the city is expected to see heavy rain and high winds beginning Saturday. We're already had an excessively wet August, and after this weekend we might break the record for the wettest month, which was set in 1882.
According to this official map (PDF), Windsor Terrace is not in a flood zone, but it's a good idea to be prepared for the storm anyway.
* In the unlikely case of an evacuation, the nearest evacuation centers are PS 249 (on Caton at Marlborough in Ditmas Park) and what was John Jay High School (237 Seventh Ave in Park Slope).
* Not to be alarmist, but it can't hurt to have some bottled water, flashlights, batteries, a radio, etc. on hand. For more info, here is a Ready NYC guide to preparing for a hurricane.
* Think about bringing any loose items indoors soon--things like patio furniture, porch decorations, etc. You don't want that stuff flying through a window!
