The owners of Gayana’s Bakery/Café, a couple, at 418 Ditmas Avenue, are originally from Tbilisi, Georgia, but most of their baked goods are not.
A cheese horn, folded in half and stuffed with farmer’s cheese, reminded me of blintzes my grandmother made. Made with puff pastry, it’s delicious. But, she explained, it’s neither a blintz or Georgian. On Mondays, they make authentic Georgian blintzes stuffed with meat, express for her customers. No puff pastry.
The only other authentic Georgian delicacy there, Khachapury, she called “a Georgian pizza.” It’s a cheese pie stuffed with mozzarella and feta with a bit of salt. A slice should be warmed up in the microwave. The café also serves good strong coffee. Definitely worth a detour. I’ve now been there twice. Tel: (718) 975–3870.
