Launch a kayak from the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse.
Looking for a fun trip this weekend that keeps you in the borough? Summer is winding down, which means it's time to pack in as much outdoor fun as you can before it's time to head back indoors. One thing you can't do as well when there's two feet of snow on the ground? Kayaking and community rowing, which is free on Saturdays all summer at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse.
Depending on your starting point, it's about a 20- to 30-minute bike ride to the launching point at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1, or about a half hour by subway. You don't need to have kayaking or rowing experience, but you do need to know how to swim (and it helps if you don't mind a the possibility of contaminated water). It all takes place inside a protected cove, so you're not going to be swept out into danger, which means it's a fun activity for kids--though anyone under 18 is required to have an adult guardian present.
