Hurricane Irene will have lasting impacts for the remainder of the season at the Windsor Terrace Greenmarket, as farms were hit hard with heavy rain and damaging winds. J. Glebocki Farms has a brief update:
Today, much of the farm is flooded and we are assessing the damage. Crops growing above ground are sitting in water and we are working quickly to get them out. Root vegetables with green tops are damaged above ground but fine below the soil for now. Crops that were recently planted will no doubt be heavily hit.
It is too early to tell what this means for the rest of our growing season. We hope to get a clearer picture over the next two weeks. There is no doubt produce in the coming weeks will definitely be effected, but we are working to bring what we can to you and your community.
Tomorrow marks the 35th anniversary of bringing fresh produce to New York City at the flagship location, the Union Square Greenmarket, and they'll be celebrating at Union Square with a photo exhibit. Be sure to stop by our own market on the anniversary to support our producers after a difficult weekend!
