Greenmarket Update

Effects of Hurricane Irene will continue to be felt at Greenmarkets around the city for the rest of this year, and into next. "Now that we've had time to assess, we have many farmers that have been affected, and unfortunately some that have been completely wiped out," says Windsor Terrace Greenmarket Manager Heather Rubi, who also manages the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket. "The best thing to do is continue to shop at the market, and also check out our GrowNYC page where we are accepting donations to help out the farmers."

None of the farmers at the Windsor Terrace Greenmarket were completely devastated, but they didn't come through unharmed. J. Glebocki Farms has had to pull out of four of the markets it attends (it'll still be at ours) because of the damage the farm saw. The farm has replanted many quick growing items, like radishes, cilantro, lettuce, spinach, kale, and arugula, which will be ready at the end of the month.

Glebocki's veggie of the week is the humble, sulfurous onion. Check the site for a onion casserole recipe, and tips on how to keep from tearing up when cutting one (I've never found a good solution--I weep freely with each onion I chop!).

The weather is keeping American Seafood out of the water, so no fish tomorrow, but there will hopefully be some music in the afternoon.

Stop by to support the farmers in this difficult time if you can, or consider donating to GrowNYC.
