Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle

A very upset neighbor emails over some sad news last night:

Ever since I moved to the neighborhood 5 years ago, I've admired the honeysuckle that grows in that random corner of grass near the 5th street entrance to the Fort Hamilton F station. In the summer I enjoy its flowers and fragrance; in the winter, it's a welcome reminder that spring will return some day. It was always so much fun to watch people walk past the honeysuckle on their way to or from the subway, take a deep breath, and walk away smiling. Everyone in the neighborhood seemed to enjoy it.

Someone destroyed the honeysuckle today.

I'm not sure who owns that piece of land (the city? the MTA?) but someone mowed the grass and weed-whacked the honeysuckle plant. It looks like it will probably die. I know it's just a plant, but it feels like a loss to the neighborhood. It seems especially ironic in light of the push to bring trees and greenery into the neighborhood.
