Jackie Gleason Bus Depot from Wikipedia Commons.
The other day I wondered why the artist behind the Greenwood Beer Garden mural had chosen a Honeymooners theme, and reader Cat helpfully pointed out that there is a bus depot nearby with a connection to the show.
The Jackie Gleason Bus Depot was dedicated in 1988 to the actor who portrayed bus driver Ralph Kramden in the show. Formerly the Fifth Avenue Depot, it is located on Fifth Avenue between 36th and 39th Streets--so, around the cemetery from the future beer garden's mural. The depot has its own Facebook page, houses some of the Transit Museum's vintage buses, and was the source of terrorism fears earlier this year when people were spotted videotaping explosive gas tanks on the site.
An additional fun facts from the MTA include that Gleason's mother "worked as a railroad clerk for 15 years," and that the depot "was once the site of an elevated railcar inspection shop."
