Councilmember Brad Lander recently supported several pieces of legislation passed by City Council that will help residents have better access to healthy food, with less waste. Coming on the heels of his help opening the Youthmarket, these bills have similar goals of offering people a choice of local, fresh food by aiming to buy local, reduce waste, understand the impact of food purchased by the city, and then try to get the state to follow the city's example.
Lander that the simple desire to improve the food system has been of interest to a diverse group:
“There really is a grassroots movement concerned about our food system and what it’s doing to our environment and to our health. The outpouring of interest from all kinds of people during my time in office has truly been striking,” said Lander.
The bills should result in better food at markets and schools, but it seems that's a little ways off. Still, it's a good start.
