Library Fine Amnesty

Good news for all you library book borrowers who can't get your act together to actually return them. Bring your overdue books back to any Brooklyn Public Library branch (Kensington branch website, WT branch website) between April 1 and 30 and they will waive your overdue fines. Think of it as a general amnesty for lazy readers.

The bad news is that starting May 1st, customers owing more than $25 in fines will receive notices from a collection agency.

Here's the fine print from the BPL website:

How can I get my overdue fines waived?
We will waive fines for most overdue materials owned by Brooklyn Public Library that are returned at the customer service desk of any neighborhood library between April 1 and 30.

We will not waive overdue fines in these cases:

* If overdue materials are returned before or after April
* If overdue materials are damaged
* If overdue materials are Interlibrary Loan books
* If overdue materials are left in internal or external book drops - these must be returned at the customer service desk

We will also not waive other fines, including lost library card fees, bounced check fees and record look-ups.

How soon will my overdue fines be cleared?
Your overdue fines will be cleared from your record as soon as the item is checked back in at the customer service desk.

No, you do not need your library card to get your overdue fines waived.
