LitWorld

LitWorld is a non-profit organization that's trying to develop sustainable literacy practices throughout the globe. Because two-thirds of the illiterate in the world are women, LitWorld has created Girls Clubs, which help create empowerment through literacy. P.S. 179 recently started it own LitWorld Girls Club, one of 18 in the United States, Kenya, Liberia, Ghana, and Iraq. The Brooklyn Eagle learned what the Club is all about at P.S. 8 in Brooklyn Heights, where LitWorld's founder and director Pam Allyn recently visited:

Allyn asked the girls which of the club’s seven “strengths” — Belonging, Sisterhood, Compassion, Confidence, Curiosity, Esteem, and Hope — they liked best.

“Sisterhood!” many called out. But one said, “When I go home I do one every single night to see how it feels.”

LitWorld aims to have a millions girls involved by next year.
