Memorial Day Weekend at Green-Wood

Memorial Day Weekend at Green-Wood

This weekend, Green-Wood Cemetery commemorates the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War with a series of events, including the Grand Procession on Sunday and a free march of honor and concert on Monday.

One of the highlights you can see starting this weekend and running through June 28 is a display of artifacts, many never before shown in public. Historian Jeff Richman has a neat preview on the Green-Wood blog, where he explains that several artillery pieces are on loan from Denny Pizzini, pictured above with some big guns:

One of them is a Union artillery piece, cast in 1853. The other is a unique piece–it was one of only five guns cast in Columbus, Georgia, in 1863, and the only one of those that survives. The largest gun, on the left side of the photograph, is the one Denny will be firing on Sunday night and Monday morning as part of our commemoration.
