The News has some insight from Claire Beckman, producing artistic director for the Brave New World Repertory Theatre, as to why the upcoming, free production of their Merry Wives of Windsor (Terrace) is set in the 1980s:
Company members flirted with setting the production in the present day, but realized the current neighborhood doesn't quite have the same working-class vibe they were going for.
"Windsor Terrace, especially, has a great blue-collar history of firefighters and sanitation workers and cops who all hang out at Farrell's," Beckman said. "[It's] a Brooklyn that is rapidly disappearing as it becomes more and more gentrified."
