The Wall Street Journal's Metropolis blog has a detailed account of the shooting on McDonald Ave this morning, and they note that two off-duty police officers from the 70th Precinct who had finished their shifts at 2am were involved, though their names have not yet been released.
NYPD Deputy Inspector Kim Royster explained that one of the cops was approached by Jonathan Leduc, who instigated a fight and hit the officer. More people from the bar joined the fight, the officer removed his gun from the holster and it fell to the sidewalk. Roberto Negron grabbed the gun and began firing at the officer, when a second officer fired and hit Negron in the leg and side:
After he was shot, Negron dropped the officer’s gun and the weapon was scooped up by a man named Jose Rivera. Other police officers responding to the shooting detained Rivera, who told them he picked up the gun but dropped it on the street. The officer’s weapon was later found on the roof of a building in the neighborhood, Royster said.
No charges have been brought against anyone involved yet.
