BENSONHURST, BROOKLYN — A 70-year-old man was mowed down by a hit-and-run driver in an SUV as he was crossing 85th Street on his motorized scooter Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The man was hit by a vehicle police described as a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, made sometime between the years 2011 and 2015.
The SUV was traveling north on 25th Avenue around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, police said, when it began to make a right turn onto 85th Street — striking the old man in the crosswalk.
After hitting and critically injuring the old man, the driver stopped in the middle of the block, briefly got out to see what had happened and then fled the scene, heading toward Stillwell Avenue, police said.
The 70-year-old man was listed in critical condition at Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park directly following the crash.
However, an NYPD spokesperson could not provide any updates on his condition Thursday.
Detectives are asking for the public’s help tracking down the SUV from the crash. (See photo and video above.) They believe the car might be showing damage in its frontal area on the passenger's side.
