A story about an all-female boxing clinic in the Brooklyn Paper today mentions Kensington's own Alicia “Slick” Ashley. A trainer at the famous Gleason's Gym in DUMBO where the clinic is taking place, Ashley is a world-champion boxer. She explained that it's her job is to get women to see their punches from start to finish and to not waste any blows.
“It’s all a mental game,” said the Kensington resident. “And that mental game applies to any aspect of your life. You have that resolve that even when it goes bad, it won’t stay bad. One little punch will change the game.”
Ashley is a 5'5" southpaw who was born in Jamaica. Her overall boxing record is fourteen wins, nine losses, and one draw. She won three successive NY Golden Gloves titles at featherweight and three World Championships to date. Additionally, she had an undefeated amateur record as a kickboxer, scholarships to Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham dance schools, and is a 2nd degree black belt in Karate!
