More than 100 people, mostly families from the surrounding neighborhoods, gathered at Greenwood Playground last Sunday to share their stories and collect signatures for a petition in support of the New York City Paid Sick Time Act.
Neighbor Cari Jackson, a mom and a lead organizer of the rally, circulated petitions among parents calling for the New York Paid Sick Time Act to come to a vote in the City Council. Jackson pointed out that the legislation is all the more necessary when economic times are difficult. “The family budget is impossible math," she said. "Parents can’t work any harder and can’t spend any less. We need policies that help working families, and paid sick time is the first step to relieving the acute stress of raising a family in this economy.”
You can still sign the online petition, located here.
Were any of you at the rally? Have you had experiences where your job made it difficult to take time off when you or your child has been sick? Please share your story in the comments.
