People Still Miffed About Loss of Street Fair
The demise of the Church Avenue Street Fair, which has run annually for years on Church from Ocean Parkway to McDonald, may be no big deal for some. But many in the community are disappointed that the festival was denied a permit this year because of what could be considered a minor technicality.
Because the fair's original director, Rabbi Zvi Florence, passed away in March, a new permit had to be acquired, because the city would not simply transfer the permit to a new official--therby making the fair "new" in the eyes of the law.
From the Gotham Gazette:
"For anyone to call this a 'new fair activity' rather than an extension of the previous 25 years has never been to our Church Avenue Fair," Larry Jayson, president of the Abermarle Neighborhood Association, told city officials in a letter in late April. "This is the same fair, same location, same event, just new sponsorship."
Under the proposed cuts, there would be about 240 fairs in the city this year, down from 321 in 2010.
