Reported rapes are up 16% citywide,http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2011/07/05/2011-07-05_vics_repo... although whether that figure indicates more rapes or better reporting is under dispute. In the 66, there have been 5 rapes this year (June 26 CompStat #25 see: crime statistics at http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/precincts/precinct_066.shtml), vs 2 last year: a 150% increase. Misdemeanor sex crimes have also gone up 133.3%.
On the other hand, increased reporting has not resulted in increased convictions. NBC NY reports:
In Brooklyn, prosecutors convicted 51 rapists last year, a 28 percent decrease from 2009. The drop in total rape convictions corresponds with an increases in arrests on rape charges— 280 in 2010 compared with 231 rape arrests in 2009. http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Victims-Group-Sees-Positive-News-in...
I mentioned to DI Sprague that another precinct held rape prevention classes. He said these classes increase rape reporting, but don't necessarily prevent rape. Be that as it may, better reporting gets everyone focused on the problem. Perhaps these classes should be offered here, as the precinct routinely does with other crime categories, like property theft.
Meanwhile, in the 72nd (Sunset Park/Windsor Terrace, Greenwood Heights) it turns out there have been 4 sexual assaults since March, double what was originally reported. An activist citizenry has pushed the 72nd to issue a Sexual Assault prevention flyer which you can read here: http://www.brownstoner.com/blog/2011/07/nypd-targeting-sexual-predator-i...
