Ride/Walk Honors Killed Cyclists

Jake McDonough Memorial, by Ray Lin.

The 6th Annual Memorial Ride and Walk takes place this Sunday, March 13, to honor cyclists killed in New York City last year. One stop will be the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Beverley Road, where 18-year-old Jake McDonough of Kensington was struck and killed by a driver with a suspended license.

The Brooklyn Paper says 16 cyclists were reportedly killed in 2010, but the true number is never quite certain:

The number of bike fatalities has been notoriously — and controversially — unclear for years, although that might change with a new ordinance that requires cops to track and post deaths and injuries citywide.

The South Brooklyn Ride begins at 1:40pm at Linton Park, one block north of 2/3/4/5 train to Van Siclen. The ride stops at Flatbush and Beverley at 3:15, and then converges with the other city-wide rides at 5 at Brooklyn Borough Hall for a memorial for unnamed pedestrians and cyclists who were killed in 2010.

Michael Oxley, whose license had been suspended three times, was charged with criminally negligent homicide in the death of Jake McDonough.

Jake's mother, Laraine McDonough, has said she supports the installation of a bike lane on Flatbush.
