Rob Garcia Drums His Way onto the Jazz Scene

Neighbor Rob Garcia has made quite a name for himself in the New York City jazz scene. After giving up backing traditional jazz acts (including working with Woddy Allen's band, which he still does occasionally), Rob decided to focus on writing music himself, and a profile in Capital New York says the Rob Garcia 4 is "fast becoming one of the city’s finest modern ensembles."
Garcia is a fine drummer and a gifted composer. He writes songs with unusual time signatures. But Garcia and his band members play them with a casualness that would dazzle the old masters. The beat rarely lands where you would expect, but the groove is always right there.
You can catch the Rob Garcia 4 at their record release show at Cornelia Street Cafe in Manhattan this Thursday, October 27, and then closer to home at the Brooklyn Conservatory on Saturday, November 5 as part of Brooklyn Jazz Wide Open.
