Sunday Evening Leiby Kletzky Candelight Vigil
Sunday Evening Leiby Kletzky Candelight Vigil
About 200–300 people attended the Vigil last night, held at the PS 230 playground, to bear witness to the child's gruesome death and honor his young life. Kensington flaunted its diversity, which included residents from Levi Aron's neighborhood, the immediate area, and from Borough Park.
Among the local politicians present were NY State Senator Eric Adams. NY State Assemblymen James Brennan and Dov Hikind, Councilman Brad Lander, Kensington CB 12 board members Maggie Tobin, Annie Ferdous, Mamnunul Haq, and district manager Wolf Sender. The 66 Precinct Community Council VP, Felix Burgos, also came. The media, too, showed up: NY 1, ABC Channel 7, WPIX, vos iz neias, and Brooklyn's Channel 12. Local blogger Lorna Girl has pictures and a brief write-up. It's also running on YouTube and in The Huffington Post.
Surprisingly, everyone present held a lit candle and managed to achieve silence. No small feat. People stayed afterwards to talk and sign the banner for the Kletzky family. The idea to hold this event came from neighbor Veronica Guzman, dubbing herself on the flyer, "Friends of Kensington."
