Call it what you will--Greenwood Heights, South Slope, maybe even Sunset Park--but the area to the west is one you may have been venturing into more and more in the past few years. While you've probably noticed new restaurants and bars popping up, have you ever noticed the smell?
Many of the factories along the waterfront are still busy cranking out candy and other sweet-smelling products. A few highlights from a Times profile of the neighborhood:
* World Confections still makes sweet treats on 30th Street--but they used to make candy cigarettes (remember those)!
* Virginia Dare, on 3rd and 32nd, manufactures flavors and extracts.

* Phoenix Candy Company, which made the Now and Later candies, was once located in a building on 35th Street, which was replaced by Sunset Park High School.
