Tacos & Burritos Grill Seized by the State for Unpaid Taxes
Tacos & Burritos Grill has been seized for nonpayment of New York State taxes. The Mexican restaurant with the giant sombrero on Prospect Park West that was named Clemen's not too long ago--or is still known as Clemen's, depending on who you ask--was seized on Tuesday, October 18.
Though I was unable to reach anyone from the restaurant, Edward Walsh, spokesman for the Department of Taxation and Finance, tells me that the business has four open tax warrants amounting to over $26,000, most of which is for unpaid sales tax.
Large notices taped to the shuttered gates are the only way neighbors knew there was a problem. The seizure came as a surprise to a group of Bishop Ford students who were heading there for lunch this afternoon. "We just ate here on Friday," one told me, as the group of boys agreed that it was one of the more affordable options on the street.
As it goes with seizures, the state will sell off whatever it can to try to make up for those unpaid taxes. Sad to see it go (the tacos were pretty good, and though Elora's has similar food, it's not quite the same), but I can't help wondering how much they want for the giant sombrero.
