The End of "Dog Day" Lawsuits

The fascinating real-life story behind the film Dog Day Afternoon, which was filmed on Prospect Park West, has just come to an end. After John Wojtowicz tried to rob a Brooklyn bank in 1972, Sidney Lumet turned his story into the film, and The Hollywood Reported explains that Wojtowicz sued Warner Bros., from jail, for not fulfilling a deal for 1% of the profits.

Now here's where it gets fun: George Heath, an inmate who helped Wojtowicz with the lawsuit, made an agreement that entitled him to a cut of that money for his services. Complications arose, and so did some lawsuits, which the courts have just put an end to once and for all.

If you'd like to become involved in some small way in the story, there's a unit that's still available in the building where the movie was filmed.
