West Indian Labor Day Parade & Carnival

West Indian Labor Day Parade & Carnival

Don't miss it. By far one of the NYC's best parades, it kicks off tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Utica Avenue. The route runs along Eastern Parkway to Grand Army Plaza, where the politicians greet the marchers. Lots of steel pan bands, floats with extravagantly feathered costumed marchers, like a conga line of peacocks flouting their tails. And  sparkles galore.

Food stalls offering homemade Caribbean food line block after block of Eastern Parkway's pedestrian malls and sidewalks, where each country sells its specialties. There's plenty of jerk chicken (good and spicy) and lemonade (excellent). The food alone is worth a detour.

For early risers, there's the J'ouvert parade starting at around 4 a.m. at Empire Blvd and Flatbush. A Trinidadian friend says it should not be missed. So go wine and mash up the place on your way to the main event.
