10 Reasons to Relay!

It's Relay for Life in Yorktown's 10th anniversary this year AND it's Relay for Life's 30th Anniversary!

First off, you might be asking, what the heck is Relay for Life?

Its the largest, global fundraising event there is! With “over 4 million people in 20 countries” participating! Teams raise money for critical cancer research & awareness. We’re in the business of saving lives! You can learn more by visiting: www.relayforlife.org/YorktownNY

Here are some of the best reasons to join Relay for Life (and trust me, there are TONS more!)

  1. You’ll be joining a really awesome community. Our Yorktown Relay community are a group of kind, motivated & supportive people. You’ll join a great group of people!
  2. Relay is a great opportunity for healing if you or a loved one has gone through a cancer journey. We celebrate our survivors, we support those going through the fight and we remember those we have lost. Our luminaria ceremony truly provides time of healing for those who need it.
  3. Our Relay teams host AWESOME fundraisers throughout the year! I know we’re always looking for events and activities to do on weekends and our teams give you lots of options. Events range in price, activity and age! Stay posted with what’s going on by visiting www.rockforrelay.weebly.com or www.relayforlife.org/YorktownNY. When you join Relay, you’ll have the option & support to host your own fundraiser too!
  4. You’ll learn more about what your money goes to when you’re fundraising. Cancer research is HUGE! Aside from government funding, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is the top research funder for cancer research. Since, 1946, they have invested more than $4 Billion in research! (yes, BILLIONS!) They have helped make tremendous strides in the cancer world.
  5. Your donations also help fund local & free programs for cancer patients. ACS provides cancer patients with free rides to treatment, free lodging if traveling for treatment is required, cancer hotline for cancer patients & caretakers, and they fund the Look Good, Feel Better program where patients can get access to free wigs during treatment. My aunt participated in this last program (I joined to help pick her wig) and it was the most incredible, heartwarming experience.
  6. The night of Relay is a total blast! We have live entertainment and over 100 booths where teams are selling food, drinks, raffle tickets, jewelry & more! We have games going on, bouncy castles & lots to do with the kids! That night, we tend to raise $50,000 or more for Relay for Life! How cool is that?
  7. If you’re really into being a part of Relay, you can even join our committee! Our committee is a group of super dedicated relayers who make pre-events & the actual event possible! They secure sponsors, help teams with their fundraising & any questions they have, they plan all the details for the event & everything in between. It’s an awesome way to get more involved & to help make Relay better every year.
  8. You can be a part of Paint the Town Purple (PTTP) which is so much fun. On May 1, check out the center of Yorktown for purple decorations everywhere! Make sure you have change and dollar bills so you can throw them in during the boot drive! As a participant, you can join other participants at PTTP to raise some money, get the word out about Relay & judge our Window Decorating contest throughout towns storefronts!
  9. It’s a fun way to get closer with your family & friends! If you create a team with your favorite people, you’ll be even more into fundraising and reaching your goal! Organizing and fundraising events will be tons of fun but also very rewarding!
  10. Every dollar you fundraise for Relay, truly makes a difference. You’ll be a cancer fighting hero!
