4 Kennedy Baseball Players Sign National Letters of Intent

Kennedy Catholic seniors Griffin Dey, Ryan Marrone, Gavin Garay and Tom Brady all signed National Letters of Intent to play college baseball November 13.

Dey, a first baseman and pitcher from Pound Ridge, will attend Yale University (New Haven, Connecticut). Garay, who played shortstop for the last two years at Kennedy but will play third base at the next level, is headed to St. John’s University (Queens, New York). Marrone, a right-handed pitcher from Ossining, will take his talents to Swarthmore College, which is just outside of Philadelphia. Brady, a second baseman from Brookfield, Connecticut, will compete at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark, New Jersey).

“It’s pretty exciting,” said Garay, who hails from Lagrangeville and chose St. John’s because of their strong academics, coaching staff and reputation. “I’ve played with these guys for a couple years now — just developing together and stuff like that.”

Dey chose Yale because it was the perfect combination of academics and athletics.

“I fit with the coaching staff real well,” said Dey, who was also being pursued by Notre Dame, Georgetown and Columbia. “It’s close to home and I feel like I can go there and do well in and out of the classroom. My whole goal was to continue my baseball career as far as I can and playing at Yale is going to help me pursue my goals. I’m really excited to get the opportunity.”

Kennedy Catholic varsity baseball head coach Bob Fletcher said that it’s the first time that he’s had three players from one team play Division 1 baseball.

“It’s a great moment today,” Fletcher said. “I’m excited because I think it’s the first time in school history that we’ve had one team with this many Division 1 players on it. Normally we have one or two and this year we have three D-1 players. I also think it’s the first time we’ve had an Ivy Leaguer going to Yale. It’s very exciting to see that we have four boys this year going to play college baseball.”
