4th Graders Get A Special Insiders Look At Albany, Step Onto New York State Assembly Floor

SHRUB OAK, NY — Fourth graders from George Washington Elementary School traveled to Albany for a hands-on lesson in state government, including a visit to the floor of the New York State Assembly.

The trip was intended to give students a chance to see where laws are made and to connect classroom lessons with the work of government.

The students were welcomed by Assemblyman Matt Slater, who represents District 94. During the visit, the students used their social studies knowledge of the judicial system in a conversation about leadership, lawmaking and the role citizens play in democracy.

The day at the State Capitol included time with elected officials, a walk through the historic statehouse building and participation in civic engagement activities. The visit centered on giving students a first-hand look at state government and the institutions they study in school, organizers said

The experience was seen as a way to blend real-world learning with the social studies curriculum. For the George Washington Elementary students, that meant seeing the Assembly floor in person and discussing how government works with a sitting lawmaker during the Albany trip.

The visit also highlighted a broader educational goal. The field trip showcased Lakeland's commitment to experiential learning by bringing students outside the classroom and into a setting tied directly to their coursework.
