Lessons In Zoning: Identifying Your Zoning District

If you ask me a question and zoning is involved, it is imperative that you know what zoning district(s) the subject property is contained within.

I will be responding to Patch readers' questions regarding building code and zoning issues on this blog. If you ask me a question and zoning is involved, it is imperative that you know what zoning district the subject property is contained within. Thankfully, Yorktown provides us with a wealth of information online. I appreciate that transparent type of governance.

Even with transparent government, it can still get confusing. Case in point: identifying your zoning district.

You need to locate your property's location on the town zoning map. Online, you can find the Yorktown Comprehensive Plan which is, well--a comprehensive plan. It outlines the vision for developing the town and has, among many other things, the zoning map. However, the online version may not be up to date.

This is a link to the online version of the Yorktown Zoning Map. It's a huge file (16MB, .pdf--know that that is before you click on that link).

You don't have to tell me your address, and--quite rightly, may not want that information public. However, I can NOT give you any useful information without an accurate zoning district. Remember, there are overlays and special use districts that may nuance the discussion.
