The ghost-with-the-most comes to the stage in Beetlejuice JR., the frightfully funny musical based on the beloved motion picture turned Broadway phenomenon. Lydia Deetz is a strange and unusual teenager, still grieving the loss of her mother and obsessed with the whole “being dead thing.” Lucky for Lydia, she and her father move to a new house haunted by a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a delightful demon with a real zest for life. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter shows his true stripes, unleashing a (Nether)world of pandemonium. With music and lyrics by Tony Award-nominee Eddie Perfect and a book by Tony Award-nominated pair Anthony King and Scott Brown, Beetlejuice was nominated for eight 2019 Tony Awards including Best New Musical. They Have Souls, Too: A Photo Exhibit of Animals by Nicole Maffei-Pires
A lifelong animal lover, Nicole always seeks to find ways to advocate for animals – in this case, with her camera. Photos in this exhibit include her rescue pets, other domestic animals, and animals from the wild or zoo. She is proud to exhibit these beautiful animals and hopes to raise awareness for animal well-being and adoption/rescue. 50% of the proceeds will be donated to SPCA Westchester.

Anyone can develop lupus, but it is most prevalent in women and people of color. Lupus commonly affects the skin, joints, and internal organs like kidneys and lungs, but it can cause inflammation and pain in any part of your body. Since it can affect patients in many different ways, it is usually hard to diagnose and hard to treat.

For our first gathering, we’re kicking things off potluck-style: choose a recipe from Chloe Flavor: Saucy, Crispy, Spicy, Vegan, prepare it at home, and bring your dish to share. We will have copies of the cookbook at the library to check out and a copy on display at the reference desk. Once you know what you are bringing, please email info@somerslibrary.org to notify us so there are no duplicated dishes.

Chess for Kids with John Gallagher Thursdays at 5:45 – 6:45 PM May 21st through June 18th For grades 1st through 5th. Back by popular request!
We are very excited to have John Gallagher with us to teach this 6-week chess program! This class provides new and experienced students with a strong foundation in the rules and strategies needed to play the game of chess through guided instruction and supervised play. Students will learn fundamentals such as:
<ul><li>How each piece moves.</li><li>The point value of each piece.</li><li>Check and checkmate.</li><li>The different outcomes of the game. (i.e., win/lose/stalemate)</li><li>The different phases of the game and the ensuing strategies (i.e., opening/middlegame/endgame)</li><li>How to properly evaluate a position.</li><li>How to formulate and implement a plan.</li><li>How to visualize and conceptualize strategic ideas.</li><li>How to identify and assess a position's strengths and weaknesses.</li></ul>
Taught by John Gallagher.
