SOMERS, NY — A Kennedy Catholic High School student is working the front lines in the fight against the new coronavirus. Senior Patrick Baia is working as an emergency medical technician in New York City and Yonkers helping to fight the effects of the virus as the health crisis continues to affect the Hudson Valley.

Baia studied for the NYS Certification for becoming EMT at Phelps Hospital, in Sleepy Hollow. He did the course and field work on his own time after school in the evenings during the winter.

He became an EMT in February, and soon thereafter began going on calls in Yonkers, New Rochelle and Mount Vernon.

Baia comes from a family with strong ties to health care. In addition to working for Empress Ambulance in Yonkers, he also volunteers as an EMT for the Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corp in Yorktown.

He is a third-generation volunteer for the Yorktown ambulance corp, following in the footsteps of his father, Daryn Baia, and grandparents Jim and Lori Baia.

Daryn Baia also works for Empress Emergency Medical Services as the director of clinical services. Baia’s mother, Erin, serves as a nurse at the Westchester Medical Center.

Patrick Baia is planning on becoming a paramedic upon completion of his studies at the University of New Haven, where he is the recipient of the university’s Presidential Scholarship.
