YORKTOWN, NY — A former Yorktown highway superintendent and a Cortlandt Manor man were accused Thursday of stealing thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise from a Home Depot.

According to Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah, former four-term Highway Superintendent and Yorktown Heights Fire Chief Eric DiBartolo and Tyrone Bass, of Cortlandt Manor, were both charged with third-degree grand larceny, a felony. The charge carries penalties ranging from probation to up to seven years in prison.

Prosecutors said the two men stole nearly $15,000 in merchandise from the Cortlandt Home Depot, where Bass was a cashier.

The felony complaint said the men engaged in a "scan and skip" scheme, in which DiBartolo, who is also a former president of the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce, brought merchandise to Bass to check out.

Authorities said, on nearly two dozen occasions, Bass completed the transactions without charging DiBartolo for many of the items.

Rocah said it was sad and disheartening to see someone who was a respected elected official and community member violate the public trust.

"These actions also have a corrosive effect throughout the area," she said, "undermining trust and confidence in government."

Police said the thefts occurred on 23 occasions in 2020. The total value of the stolen goods was $14,479.78, authorities said.

DiBartolo and Bass were arraigned in the Cortlandt Town Court.
