Galef Seeks Outside Assessment of Pipeline Project Effect on Indian Point
The state assemblywoman has written to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
New York State Assemblywoman Sandy Galef has serious concerns about Spectra Energy’s plans to expand its Algonquin natural gas pipeline.
Work for the AIM project and its successors, the Atlantic Bridge and Access Northeast projects, which are on Spectra’s drawing board, would go through Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties on its way from Pennsylvania to New England.
Galef wrote the the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission about the pipeline’s proximity to the Indian Point nuclear power facility.

“I believe it is prudent and in the best interests of the public’s health and safety to require an independent risk analysis of the ramifications of a 42” gas pipeline rupture at the proposed AIM site,” she said in her letter.

Galef is calling for “an independent risk analysis to be performed by those with both gas pipeline as well as nuclear power plant expertise” and urging FERC to delay any decision on the AIM project until this assessment is complete.
FERC staff have concluded that the AIM project would not pose any significant environmental hazards and have also said that strong and sufficient precautions and distances preclude any problem with Indian Point.
