Kenneth Feinberg Discusses What a Life is Worth with Westchester Major Donors

UJA-Federation of New York's Westchester community kicks off Annual Campaign with Special Master of 9/11 Fund

Generous donors in Westchester gathered at a Scarsdale home to celebrate their caring commitment to UJA-Federation of New York and its life-changing work on Wednesday, September 28, 2016. Through UJA-Federation, more than 50,000 donors address issues that matter most to them, pooling their resources to care for Jews everywhere and New Yorkers of all backgrounds, respond to crises close to home and far away, and shape our Jewish future.

The evening featured Kenneth Feinberg, the “one attorney in America called upon, again and again, to administer compensation for victims and survivors of the nation’s most spectacular disasters” (The Observer). A leading expert in mediation and alternative dispute resolution, he has created compensation plans for victims of 9/11, General Motors defect-caused accidents, the Boston Marathon bombing, the BP oil spill, and the shootings at Newtown-Sandy Hook, the Aurora movie theater, Virginia Tech, and recently the Orlando night club.

Mr. Feinberg’s book, What is Life Worth?, explores his “grueling efforts to make the seemingly inscrutable, arbitrary compensation process transparent and accessible” for victims of 9/11 (The New York Times). At this event, he explored what we really owe the victims of natural or manmade disasters and whether justice is a realistic expectation.
