Let's Get It Straight!
New to sewing? Learn a few tricks to sewing in a straight line. Know the basics to keep advancing!
It might sound silly, but sewing in a straight line isn't as easy as it sounds!
It takes practice just like everything else. If you're new to sewing or if you got a new machine, read on to see a few tips on how to get your lines pin straight!
First things first, you need to be comfortable with your machine. If you're unsure about it and a little nervous, it's going to affect how your lines come out. Spend some time getting to know it! Name if you'd like! Play around with your pedal and the different adjustments so you can get it just right. Start off by using fabric you don't really love while you practice. Maybe use muslin to practice straight lines over and over until you're ready. That's what I did!
Most sewing machines should have some sort of grid on the inside, typically to the right of your needle. Some might even have a grid on both sides. We're going to use that to our advantage. You're going to use these grids to make sure your inseams are the right measurements, they'll help you keep your items consistent.
You're also going to use these lines to help guide you to achieving your straight lines.
Lets get started! Turn on your machine and get your fabric ready. Pick a line from the grid you want to follow and line up your fabric with that line. Start slow with your pedal, there is no need to rush.
The great thing about sewing is that you really don't need to do much once your machine begins. It will automatically feed your fabric through, so don't force anything. Just keep a careful eye out to make sure your fabric is still following the line you chose. You can adjust the direction it's moving as you're sewing if needed. That should be easy to do since you'll be gently holding your fabric as it goes.
So take your time, keep a good eye on your grid and only guide the fabric when you need to! As you get more comfortable during your practice sessions, you'll feel better taking on bigger projects or hemming your favorite pair of pants!
