License Plate Reader Nabs Lack Of Vehicle Registration

The arresting officer was in a vehicle equipped with the automated device.

YORKTOWN, NY — A Yorktown Heights man faces legal woes after the vehicle he was driving was tagged by an automated license plate reader as allegedly having suspended registration. Yorktown Police charged Stephen J. Caruso, 25, with suspended registration, a misdemeanor, and speed in zone and operating without insurance, traffic infractions.

Around 11:15 a.m. Aug. 7, an officer on routine patrol on Lexington Avenue was in a marked patrol vehicle equipped with an automated license plate reader. (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

The device alerted the officer that a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction allegedly had a suspended registration.

A traffic stop was conducted and the officer determined that Caruso, the driver, was allegedly operating the vehicle while the registration was suspended for an insurance lapse.

It was also alleged he was speeding and driving without insurance.

Caruso was taken to Yorktown Police Headquarters and released on $100 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in Yorktown Justice Court Sept. 7.
