NYSEG Reporting Phone Scam In Hudson Valley
The caller ID comes through as a real NYSEG telephone number.

SOMERS, NY — A phone scam targeting NYSEG customers is going around the Hudson Valley. An email from RIck Morrissey, the supervisor of the Town of Somers, said area residents are getting phone calls from someone who says they are from the power company.
The caller ID reads “NYSEG 800-572-1111,” which is a correct phone number.
The person calling said the person who was called would have their electricity turned off in 45 minutes and they been sent a letter 10 days earlier stating as such.

The potential victim was told to call their corporate office where the request was filed to discuss.

The victim was also told to call 866-978-8510 where they were then instructed to make a payment within 45 inutes to a location in Auburn, NY or their electricity would be disconnected.
Morrissey said that when potential victims asked the caller what the account number was or where Auburn was located, the caller hung up.
If you call NYSEG at 800-572-1111, you can verify your account is current and that the call was a scam.
“Please just hang up if you receive a call like this,” Morrissey said.
