Patrick J. McAward, Jr. of Somers Dies at 79

Patrick J. McAward, Jr. passed away at his home in Somers on Monday, April 29. He was 79.

McAward was born on Feb. 13, 1934 in Flushing, New York to Patrick J. and Lucy (Aufenanger) McAward, Sr. He attended All Hallows High School and went on to graduate from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1955.

He married the only love of his life, Jean Ann Schehr on Dec. 26, 1955, and together they shared 57 years. He and Jean had five children; Patrick Joseph III (Nancyanne), Michael John SM, Timothy James (Megara), Maura Jean, and Kevin Jeremy (Jennifer).

McAward was honorably discharged from the United State Army as 1st Lieutenant Corps of Engineers on Aug. 28, 1963. He taught his children many life lessons as a father, a coach, and a friend which will endure forever. On Dec. 31, 1997, after 42 years with Tippetts-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton, Engineers and Architects, Patrick, then a partner in the firm, retired to celebrate life with Jean, their children, and their nine grandchildren: Patrick Joseph, IV, Robert Benedict, Anne Katherine, Andrew Jacob, Erin Rose, Timothy James, Jr., Katherine Mae, Caroline Mary, and Mary Elizabeth.

Together, the man and his wife enjoyed friends and traveling, but devoted their lives to family and faith.

McAward was a member of the Moles Association for more than 25 years, served in leadership positions at Heritage Hills in Somers, gave service as parish councilman, taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD), and served as Extraordinary Minister administering Holy Communion to the sick.

He is survived by his sisters Mary Bell, Frances Costello, and Sr. Nancy McAward OP and was preceded in death by his sister Barbara Quinn.
