Road Closures Planned As Yorktown Mourns Lt. Kenneth Sgroi

The 37-year-old lieutenant with the Yorktown Police Department died Monday in Manhattan after a short illness.

YORKTOWN, NY — Street closures and satellite parking arrangements will be put in place as Yorktown pays respect to police Lieutenant Kenneth "Kenny" Sgroi.

Sgroi died Monday, the department said. He was 37.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Yorktown Funeral Home, located at 945 East Main St. in Shrub Oak.

Parking for outside police agencies and parking for the general public for Lt. Sgroi's wake will be at the Jefferson Valley Mall, located at 650 Lee Blvd. in Yorktown Heights. Attendees are asked to park in one of the parking lots closest to Lee Blvd. on the south and west sides of the mall. Free shuttle bus service will be provided to and from the mall and the Yorktown Funeral Home. East Main St. in front of the Yorktown Funeral Home (from Barger St. to Old Yorktown Rd.) will be open to westbound traffic only. Heavy traffic delays are expected in this area.

A funeral mass will be be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Patrick’s Church, located at 137 Moseman Rd. in Yorktown Heights

Parking will be available on the BOCES Pines Bridge campus and free shuttle bus service will be provided from BOCES to and from St. Patrick's Church. Local street parking will also be available. Attendees are asked to be respectful of private driveways and allow adequate access for emergency vehicles when parking on the street.

The burial will follow on Saturday at Assumption Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor.

The following roads will be closed on Saturday:

  • Hanover St. from Hudson Rd. to Moseman Rd. will be closed at 8 a.m.
  • Hanover St. will be closed from Croton Heights Rd. to Commerce St. at 9 a.m.
  • Moseman Rd. will be closed from Pines Bridge Rd. (Somers) to Front St. at 9 a.m.
  • All side streets that lead onto Hanover St. between Croton Heights Rd. and Commerce St. will be closed at Hanover at 9 a.m.

Local road closures and delays are expected throughout the morning.

In a Facebook post announcing Sgroi's death, Yorktown Police Chief Robert Noble said the lieutenant is survived by a wife and two children.

Noble said Sgroi was an outstanding police officer and an "even better man."

On Wednesday, members of the Yorktown Heights Fire Department, along with members from the Millwood Fire Department, the Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Empress Emergency Medical Services, paid tribute to Sgroi above the Taconic State Parkway as his body was returned to Yorktown from a New York City hospital.
