September Events Offered by NWH and the Center for Healthy Living
Reducing disease risk through cooking, smoking cessation courses, & Wellness Wednesday among virtual events this September
Part one of a three-part cooking series for reducing disease risk and an expert panel on supporting your child’s transition back into school in good health are September’s featured programs offered by Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) and the Center for Healthy Living. In September, virtual events for new and future moms include courses on breastfeeding and newborn care, and a class for expectant grandparents. Other free, virtual events to help people feel better and get healthier include smoking cessation and a Wellness Wednesday on urinary incontinence.
Located next to the Whole Foods Market at Chappaqua Crossing, the Center for Healthy Living supports health and wellness through education, health resources, diverse programing and referrals. Cooking for Reducing Disease Risk, Part 1: Heart Disease

Reducing your risk for chronic disease starts in the kitchen. The foods we eat and prepare for ourselves and our families can be nourishing, satisfying and healthy. Join Northern Westchester Hospital Registered Dietitian Amy Rosenfeld for an informative three-part virtual cooking series. Attendees will learn how to put the nutritional recommendations from the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and the American Diabetes Association into action. Learn how to prepare nutritious, delicious meals that reduce your risk for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Back to School in Good Health
Thursday, September 23, 5 – 6 pm, live over Zoom
Cost: Free
Start the school year off on the right foot with a healthy routine. Our dynamic panel of pediatricians will discuss ways you can support your child's transition back into the new school year in good health. Recommendations for sleep and overall health, food choices, and mental well-being will be discussed, as well as the latest information on the COVID-19 vaccination for children.

Virtual Grandparenting 101
Multiple dates, 4 – 5:30 pm
Cost: $30
This class helps prepare expectant grandparents as they transition into this new, exciting role! We cover current evidence-based practices, provide a refresher on baby care basics, and discuss how you can support your child as they raise their own. Registration is required. Friends and Family CPR
Thursday, September 9, 6:30 – 9 pm, live over Zoom
Cost: $30
Friends and Family CPR teaches lifesaving skills. American Heart Association instructors will show you how to perform adult and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and treatment of choking with videos and hands on demonstration. This class is for participants ages 16+.

Smoking Cessation
Tuesdays, September 14, 21, and 28, 6 – 7 pm, live over Microsoft Teams
Cost: Free

Virtual Breastfeeding Class
Multiple dates, 6 – 8 pm, live over Microsoft Teams
Cost: $30
This comprehensive class is taught exclusively by our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) for women who are considering or have decided to breastfeed. The class will cover advantages of breastfeeding; building and maintaining your milk supply; strategies for success; breastfeeding techniques; diet considerations; nipple care; and tips for partner feeding. Virtual Newborn Care Class
Wednesday, September 22, 6 – 8 pm
Cost: $30/couple
Topics include newborn care, feeding patterns, common parental concerns, and the role of pediatricians during your baby’s stay at the hospital. Upon availability, a pediatrician will join at the end of class for a Q&A session. Please note, this support group is for mothers who have already delivered their baby. Wellness Wednesdays – Urinary Incontinence

This month’s Wellness Wednesday will focus on urinary incontinence with NWH Physical Therapists Sonia Mundacka and Marcela Denzer.

Calming Scents
Thursday, September 30, 1 – 2 pm, live over Zoom
Cost: Free
Learn to harness your senses for relaxation. Our sense of smell can serve many beneficial purposes, including helping us be more energetic or feel calmer. Join Rachel Merchan, LCSW, to explore the connection between scents and mood. Rachel will highlight the availability of nurturing scents all around us, from the outdoors to your kitchen. A sensory exercise will demonstrate ways to engage with different smells to support relaxation.
