Services are Jan. 5 for Stan Gitner

Mr. Gitner was a film restorer, volunteer, and the pre-eminent spot news photographer of northern Westchester and Putnam counties.

GITNER, Stanley Gitner, a longtime resident of Yorktown Heights, NY, died Jan. 3 at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor, NY following a recent illness.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 3, 1929, the son of the late Rebecca and Frank Gitner. A graduate of Erasmus Hall H.S., Brooklyn, NY and City College of New York, class of 1952, he majored in motion picture film technology, a major designed especially for him.

Stanley married Sonia (Auerbach) Gitner of Bronx, NY on January 27, 1951. He is survived by his wife, Sonia, three sons, Fred of New York, NY, Barry (Joanne) of Morgan Hill, CA and Henry (Debra) of Goshen, NY. Also survived by grandchildren Jessica of St. Louis, MO, Andrew of Denver, CO and Christopher, a student at Purchase College (SUNY) (NY). Additionally he is survived by step-grandchildren Scott Choy, Scarsdale, NY, Alyson (Perry) Ganz, Natick, MA and three step-great-grandchildren, Tyler, Zachary and Leah Ganz.

His career in motion picture film rejuvenation (the repair and restoration of motion picture film) spanned more than 30 years. His parallel career as a spot news photographer lasted over 50 years and was his true passion.

His local volunteer service began in 1962 with the Yorktown Auxiliary Police. In 1982 he was appointed Deputy Director of the Town of Yorktown Office of Disaster and Emergency Services, a title he held until his death. He was honored in 2011 by the Yorktown Town Board for his 50 years of tireless service.

Stanley was proud to have been honored by many local volunteer fire departments and ambulance corps, becoming an honorary life member of both the Yorktown and Mohegan Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

He was a longtime member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers as well as the Yorktown Jewish Center.

Stanley will be missed by his family and friends and all of the people he touched in his many years in Yorktown.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5 at 1PM at Yorktown Funeral Home, 945 East Main Street (at Route 132), Shrub Oak, NY 10588 (914-962-0700) immediately followed by burial at King David Cemetery, Putnam Valley, NY.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that contributions in memory of Stanley be made to one of the following: Hudson Valley Hospital Center, 1980 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor, NY 10567; Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 104, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598; Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 162, Mohegan Lake, NY 10547.
