Social Media Helps Police Solve Shoe Store Fraud

State police posted an image on Facebook and got a tip. Now a Yorktown woman has been arrested.

On July 1, 2015, New York State Police from the Cortlandt barracks arrested Danielle M. Carey, 27, of Yorktown, for Falsifying Business Records 2nd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor.

“The State Police would like to thank the community for providing us with the tip that led to Carey’s arrest,” a spokesman said.

In May of 2015, Troopers from the Cortlandt barracks were dispatched to investigate a fraud complaint. An unidentified suspect reportedly entered a DSW store in the Cortlandt Town Center, removed a pair of shoes from the shelf, and used another person’s receipt to make a fraudulent return.

In June of 2015, the suspect’s image was displayed on the New York State Police Facebook Page requesting public assistance to help make an identification. Troopers received an anonymous tip from a NYSP Facebook follower identifying Carey as a possible suspect. Investigation confirmed that Carey was responsible for the fraudulent return.

Carey was arraigned and sent to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail.
