
So far this year—spring to July 24—there have been 29 whale sightings in waters close to New York City, a citizen-scientist group tells the New York Post.
The group, Gotham Whale, is a research organization dedicated to the study of marine mammals in New York City Harbor and New York Bight.
The leader of the group, Paul Sieswerda, told the New York Post that they counted 43 whales in 2013, up from 25 in 2012—and that was a jump from the five they found in 2011.

It’s because the cleaner water attracts more fish that whales find tasty, he said.
