YORKTOWN, NY — The Yorktown town board created a capital improvements trust to fund park renovations.

Funds in the amount of about $143,000 in rent and fees that Yorktown expects to receive annually for the next 25 years for a solar array carport to be installed at Granite Knolls Park's parking lot.

The trust fund will only be used for park improvements — not for employee salaries or other town administrative costs.

Supervisor Matt Slater said the fund will put the parks department in an incredibly strong position financially.

"The beauty of this is that we're doing it at no expense to taxpayers," he said.

The solar panels, which will provide shade for parked cars, will be installed by HESP Solar, which estimated the project will reduce carbon dioxide by as much as having 1.249 acres of mature forest.

Money in the trust fund will help pay for projects like the ongoing renovation of the town's outdated playgrounds, some of which were recently closed because of safety concerns.
