Yorktown Lions Collect Record Number of Turkeys
Due to the efforts of the Yorktown Lions and various volunteer organizations, all local residents should enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Yorktown Lions Shatter Turkey Record
Last year the Yorktown Lions’ turkey drive collected 111 turkeys. This year’s goal of 200 appeared to be a formidable challenge. However, the Lions met and surpassed that number by collecting and distributing over 260 turkeys.
The Yorktown businesses and the community are to be applauded for their support. Acme (Triangle Center), BJ’s, Trader Joe’s, Shoprite (Mohegan Lake) Uncle Giuseppe’s, and the Restaurant Depot all assisted the turkey drive. Some stores provided free turkeys, while others gave the Lions gift cards, a bag of Thanksgiving food favorites, or turkeys at a reduced cost. In all, about 90 turkeys were donated by local supermarkets.

The Yorktown community showed its generosity by donating - at three different drop off locations: by the Lakeland Administration building during the Veterans Day Parade, outside Uncle Giuseppe’s Market Place, and the town’s gazebo. The momentum for the successful turkey drive actually started during the Lions’ Halloween Carnival on Oct. 28. Over $300 in donations were received while others pledged to drop off turkeys. Those who pledged did not forget, for over 80 turkeys were dropped off at our collection centers. Plus, the total donated at the Halloween Carnival, the three collection centers, and on-line totaled over $3,000.
The Yorktown Lions were then able to supplement the turkey donations by buying the additional turkeys with the donations. The Lions then delivered the turkeys to the Mildred Strang Middle School and Yorktown High School, St. Mary’s Church in Mohegan Lake, The First Presbyterian Church on Route 202, and to My Brother Vinny, a veterans’ support group. At each of these sites, volunteers organized the turkeys and side dishes (not all locations) for local distribution.

Due to a surplus of donated funds, the Yorktown Lions will now repeat their Thanksgiving deliveries - as the demand dictates – during the upcoming holidays. According to Denise Poulin, the President of the Yorktown Lions, “The Yorktown Lions’ goal is to guarantee that all local families have food on their tables. That continuing goal could not be accomplished without the support of our caring local markets and our generous community.”
