1. UNCA Greek Life reshapes stigma and works to gain membership amid declining numbers (thebluebanner.net) — UNC Asheville's small Greek Life community is working to shed old stigmas and rebuild membership, with just 29 students currently involved across three organizations. Leaders describe efforts to emphasize inclusion, philanthropy, and community service, while recruiting more students during fall rush and highlighting recent recognition like a student organization of the year award.
   

2. First Watch in Biltmore Village fights to save its lease (citizen-times.com) — A First Watch restaurant in Biltmore Village is suing its landlord, claiming an attempted lease termination—after Tropical Storm Helene damage—violates their long-term agreement so the site can be sold to a hotel developer. The company says it relied on ongoing talks with the landlord and the city of Asheville about floodplain fixes, and now seeks to preserve its lease and block any sale that would displace it.
   

3. Answer Man: What's with the massive pile of stuff on Westover Drive in Montford? Will it be cleaned out? • Asheville Watchdog (avlwatchdog.org) — Neighbors in Montford's Westover Drive can expect the long-cluttered property at 210 Westover to be cleared once NCDOT finalizes its eminent-domain purchase for the I-26 Connector. Asheville officials say the site has racked up sanitation citations and safety concerns, but cleanup will accelerate after the state gains full access, with the owner still racing to move his belongings out.
   

4. Breaking-and-entering black bear on the loose in Asheville area (citizen-times.com) — Wildlife officials are tracking a female black bear that has broken into multiple homes in the Asheville area and shows little fear of people, raising safety concerns. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission plans to euthanize the bear once captured and has already relocated two young cubs, while urging residents to follow BearWise guidance to reduce conflicts.
   

5. High School Round Up: September 3, 2026 (wlos.com) — Asheville-area high school teams had a busy night, with Asheville Christian, Asheville School and Asheville High all posting wins in soccer, field hockey and volleyball. Local standouts like Reece Shuman and Olivia Johnson led strong performances as schools from across Western North Carolina, including Pisgah, T.C. Roberson and West Henderson, wrapped up straight-set volleyball victories.
