📰 News we're reading

1. From gap to 'glut': Asheville apartment supply surges • Asheville Watchdog (avlwatchdog.org) — Asheville renters are seeing rare leverage right now, with thousands of new apartments driving up vacancies, softening rents, and prompting big move-in incentives across the city and Buncombe County. But experts warn that deeply affordable units remain almost nonexistent and that today's deals may fade as projects fill and construction slows, leaving long-term housing affordability still unresolved for many local workers.

2. Omni Grove Park Inn administrator arrested in Nevada probation case (citizen-times.com) — An administrator at Asheville's Omni Grove Park Inn has been arrested in Asheville by U.S. marshals and extradited to Nevada over alleged probation violations tied to a 2012 reckless driving conviction. Local readers may notice his absence at the resort as Nevada authorities pursue the case, while the Grove Park Inn has not yet commented publicly on his status.

3. Parts of Asheville Blade case over reporter arrests can move on: Judge (citizen-times.com) — A federal magistrate judge has recommended that key First Amendment and phone-seizure claims by two Asheville Blade reporters arrested at Aston Park move forward against individual officers, while suggesting claims against the city of Asheville be dismissed. The city has not commented yet, and both sides now have a short window to challenge the recommendation before a district judge issues a final ruling.

4. Blood donors needed across western North Carolina, American Red Cross says (wlos.com) — Residents in Asheville and across western North Carolina are being urged to donate blood as the American Red Cross works to recover from a recent blood crisis and prepare for the upcoming holiday season. Officials say donations are especially critical now, with potential storms, illnesses, and busy schedules likely to reduce donor turnout in the coming months.

5. El Niño could be supercharged this year. Here's what that means for the Blue Ridge (bpr.org) — Western North Carolina, including Asheville, is being warned to expect a warmer, much wetter winter as a potentially record-strong El Niño develops. Past El Niño years brought Asheville its five wettest winters, so residents are urged to prepare now by checking flood-prone spots, clearing storm drains, and planning for possible flash flooding, especially where Hurricane Helene altered waterways.
