📰 News we're reading

1. Buncombe commissioners talk bear response, disaster dollars (bpr.org) — Buncombe County leaders are weighing how to tackle rising bear encounters and a major funding gap for 203 planned affordable apartments on Coxe Avenue in downtown Asheville. Commissioners also advanced plans for the new Deaverview Park, expanded litter pickup on secondary roads, and conservation easements to protect local farmland and forestland, while eyeing a November housing bond referendum.

2. North Carolina city bars landlords from collecting rent on units deemed unsafe (thecooldown.com) — Asheville renters now have stronger leverage when homes become unsafe, thanks to a new city rule blocking landlords from collecting rent on units officially deemed unsafe if critical repairs are ignored. After months of organizing by the Asheville Area Tenants Union, the unanimously approved change aligns the city with several others in North Carolina and could help vulnerable tenants recoup money.

3. Ingles hand soap, others recalled in NC for bacterial contamination (citizen-times.com) — Hand soaps sold at Ingles stores in Asheville are part of a multi-state recall over potential bacterial contamination, including Laura Lynn honey apple crisp and foaming pear scent varieties. Residents are urged to stop using the affected bottles, discard or return them, clean any surfaces they touched, and contact a healthcare provider if they notice signs of infection.

4. Stenhouse takes detour during Bristol week for Pro-Am at Biltmore Championship Asheville (wlos.com) — NASCAR driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. slipped away from Bristol race week to play in the Pro-Am for the inaugural Biltmore Championship Asheville at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove.
